Ananya Vinay is the big winner of the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee! The 12-year-old from Fresno, California, won by spelling  “marocain” – a type of dress fabric of ribbed crepe. Ananya is the 13th-consecutive Indian American to win the competition and the 18th of the previous 22 winners to have Indian heritage.

Congratulations to Randolph Middle School student Akshra Paimagam’s who was among the 49 contestants left standing after the first day of competition at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. 234 students were eliminated yesterday and Akshra successfully completed the day’s first round by accurately spelling “camphor”.
