June is Black Music Month, and Praise 100.9 is celebrating with daily features about national and local black musicians. In Charlotte, many people are familiar with artists such as John P. Kee and Donald Lawrence. However, Charlotte has a deeper gospel musical tradition that dates back to the ’30s with acts such as Golden Gate Quartet, who regularly appeared on radio programs here.
In the next month, Praise 100.9 will highlight the local black music scene — old and new — with the help of Levine Museum of the New South historian Tom Hanchett and local artists. Praise will also feature local celebrities and leaders discussing their relationships with music.
