Gun owners and enthusiasts who are sensing that President Barack Obama’s possible re-election will lead to stricter gun laws, have been purchasing and stockpiling firearms at a record rate in several states, according to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram.

In Texas, where gun sales are one of the highest in this country just behind Kentucky, people are voicing concerns that Obama winning in November will signal that he’ll pass strict gun laws without regard to the public’s wants.

“Look who the Republicans are trying to put against Obama,” said DeWayne Irwin, a a gun store owner,  to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram. “It’s the Keystone cops and people are getting scared. People are terrified he’s going to get re-elected and then he won’t care about getting votes next time. He’ll just pass whatever legislation he wants.”

A cursory search of Obama’s position on guns and gun control may reveal how this anxiety formed. Sites, such as gunbanobama.com and nra-ila.org, paint Obama as a gun-control radical who is hell-bent on taking away Americans’ Second Amendment rights. A site called “The Obama Files,” it reads:

Obama favors complete ban of handguns (except for the Black Panthers).

Obama’s presidential campaign [in 2008] … worked to assure uneasy gun owners that he believes the Constitution protects their rights and that he doesn’t want to take away their guns.

But before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of the Joyce Foundation, a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.

The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners’ rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans.  And it paid to support a book called “Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.”

Alan Korwin of GunLaws.com adds:

“I’m constantly getting questions from people in the gun community about this [Obama stripping Americans of their Second Amendment rights]. People are concerned that if Obama wins, as a lame duck, he will go after firearms in a way we have never seen before.”

The issue of gun-control laws really came to a head back in 2011, after Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people were shot at a Safeway store in Tucson, Arizona, by a 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner. Five people died at the scene, including Chief Judge John Roll and 9-year-old Christina Taylor-Green. At the time, President Obama was pressured by many to find stricter ways to restrict gun access.

In response, President Obama formed groups to tackle the issue without interfering with the Second Amendment. According to the Huffington Post:

“The president directed the Attorney General to form working groups with key stakeholders to identify common sense measures that would improve American safety and security while fully respecting Second Amendment rights,” Carney said at Thursday’s briefing. “That process is well underway at the Department of Justice with stakeholders on all sides working through these complex issues and we expect to have more specific announcements in the near future.”

The recent high school shooting in Cleveland, Ohio, last week, where three teens were killed, continues many to call for stricter gun laws.

On the other hand, the gun-buying hysteria may not all be Obama-related. The Star-Telegram further reports that gun sales could be spiking because of a tax refund surplus and because of folks who are preparing for the apocalypse.

As for the actual numbers, the FBI reports that last year alone, 16.3 million background checks for potential gun buyers were ran, which is up from 11.4 million in 2007. Kentucky’s numbers are said to be high due to monthly background checks ran on previous gun owners.

Are gun owners suffering with Chicken Little disease or is Obama going to flip-flop on his previous stances that he supports the constitutional right for citizens to legally bear arms?
