We’ve all heard about or seen highly-acclaimed basketball movies like Hoosiers, Hoop Dreams, He Got Game, Blue Chips and Love & Basketball a million times.

But what about hoop flicks that don’t get the big headlines?

Just because movie critics and fans continuously applaud heralded films doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the only ones featuring basketball worth watching these days.

Here are my Top 5 underrated basketball movies of all time. Please read, enjoy and share your favorite overlooked hoop films throughout the years.

Rapper Bow Wow shines in this as teenaged-orphan Calvin Cambridge, who transforms into a spectacular baller after acquiring a pair of beat-up Nike sneakers. Perhaps Like Mike‘s initial premise is too far-fetched, but at the buzzer the film achieves its goal of presenting a feel-good story for the whole family.

4. Hurricane Season (2009).

Basketball is the only thing coach Al Collins, played by Forest Whitaker, and his young squad have left after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, La., in 2005. Just one year after the disaster, Whitaker wills his fearless players, who had previously attended five different high schools, to the state title.

3. The Heart of the Game (2005).

Centered on star player Darnellia Russell and coach Bill Resler, this powerful documentary follows the successful run of the Roosevelt Roughriders, a girls’ high school basketball team in Washington State. From prejudices to teen pregnancy, The Heart of the Game dives into a bit of everything for viewers.
