Yesterday marked the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. A highly charged moment in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict given its on-again, off-again peace talks. The US – who politically has always tried to maintain some semblance of neutrality in order to mediate those talks – now, led by President Donald Trump, is clearly siding with Israel.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians protested along the border that Israel shares with Gaza. Setting fires, shooting, setting off bombs. Palestinian officials say Israeli troops killed are responsible for the deaths of at least 58 people with injuries to nearly 3,000. Israel defends its actions, saying it has the right to defend its borders, and holds Hamas responsible. Protests are expected to continue today.
