Mariah Carey announced in a People magazine cover story, that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The article reveals that she was first diagnosed in 2001 when she was hospitalized following a breakdown, and is now in therapy and taking medication. Bipolar disorder is defined as “a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).”
