Black Panther, Marvel Studio’s first black superhero film, is on track for a $218 million domestic debut, giving it the fifth-biggest opening of all time. Panther boasts the second biggest debut for a Marvel Studios film, coming in behind 2012’s The Avengers. Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright, Black Panther also earned $169 million internationally. The numbers smashed analyst projections of a $165 million opening, and instantly makes it the top-grossing film in history by a black director.
