In what is being referred to as a referendum against “Trumpism” minorities showed up to the polls last night across the country. The result, a diverse cast of winners, in particular the Democrats coming away with key wins. There were seven elected as the African American mayor in their respective municipalities for the first time: Statesboro GA – Jonathan McCollar, Georgetown SC – Brendan Barber, Milledgeville GA – Mary Parham Copelan, Helena MT – Wilmot Collins, Cairo GA – Booker Gainor, St Paul MN – Melvin Carter and of course in our own city Vi Lyles will become Charlotte NCs first Black female mayor. In other races, Ravi Bhalla will become Hoboken’s first Sikh mayor after topping five other candidates on Tuesday.
