As a child Monica Wood, principal and lead strategist for MWPR, Inc. (Monica Wood Public Relations), was influenced by her mother’s classic style. Below the Charlotte transplant (she’s originally from Baltimore) shares her thoughts on fashion and style in our first The Look feature.
1. How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as being “me”. What I mean by that is I don’t dress based on what I see in the magazines or from what others wear; I style myself based on occasion, what I like, what looks right on my body and is comfortable.
2. Who is your favorite designer?
I have many favorite designers, Marc Jacob, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, St. John, Ralph Lauren, etc. But, who I like and what I wear are two different things. The designers or brands I wear for jewelry, which is my thing, include Swarovski and Tiffany. For clothes, a lot of Calvin Klein, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor.
3. What accessory do you have to wear every day?
Anyone who knows me knows that accessories are my thing. I must wear a funky ring. But, my favorite is my onyx Swarovski ring.
4. What’s your fashion pet peeve?
Folks dressing inappropriate for the occasion, their age or their body shape.
5. What fashion tips would you like to share with others?
Be true to you. Don’t think that something that appeals to your eyes and emotions seen in a magazine or on a store mannequin will look the same on you. You can look just as good in something that compliments your body, your personality, the occasion and your lifestyle…its all in your attitude. Strive to be the best YOU you can be. Don’t waste time trying to be the best someone else…you will never be happy.
6. What’s your favorite color?
My favorite color has always been purple. But, I love fall, earth tones and classical navy to wear.
7. If you had to describe your style in terms of music, what artists, genre of music etc would you say best describes your style?
Genre of music would be traditional jazz , R &B and gospel and artists would be for female a combo of Janet Jackson, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Jill Scott and Mary Mary. For male artists it would be a combo of Peabo Bryson, Luther Vandross, R Kelly, Frankie Beverly & Maze and Byron Cage.
