HOUSTON – (Covering Katy) – A fatal accident on the Katy Freeway west at Beltway 8 shut down all main lanes westbound Wednesday night at about 9 p.m.

Sargent J.D. Rossman of the Houston Police Department said the driver of a pickup slammed into an emergency-sign truck during setup for street sweeping. The emergency-sign truck was parked in the emergency lane.

“We had a black Silverado traveling in that same emergency lane at a high rate of speed.  The pickup truck struck the sign truck which was stationary.  The driver of the pickup truck was deceased at the scene,” Rossman said.

Toxicology tests will be performed to see if the driver of the pickup truck was impaired but Rossman said it did not appear he’d been drinking.  Why he was speeding in an emergency lane is still unknown.

The operator of the emergency-sign truck was outside of his vehicle at the time and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The name of the victim was being withheld until his relatives are notified.
