The U.S. Navy made history yesterday as Admiral Michelle Janine Howard became it’s highest-ranking female in history and the first to receive four stars. In 1999, Howard was the first African-American woman to command a ship and is now taking on the role of Vice Chief of Naval Operations, making her the number two ranking officer in the Navy. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says that “Her accomplishment is a direct example of a Navy that now, more than ever, reflects the nation it serves — a nation where success is not borne of race, gender or religion, but of skill and ability.”
