Delta’s grand opening drew elected officials, city leaders and Radio One’s foodies. The new restaurant is on North Tryon Street in the former home of GW Finns. The New Jersey-based restaurant touts soul-inspired food. The menu is a mix of traditional soul food dishes with a touch of cajun. On first bite, the collards and barbecue ribs were delicious. The macaroni and cheese was a little soupy. It’s not the baked mac-n-cheese found at soul spots such as the House of Prayer. The menu is also pricier than most soul food restaurants, but Delta’s isn’t like most soul food joints. It’s a supper club with plush seating and a lounge-like atmosphere. Expect live music and extensive drink menu.
During the grand opening festivities on Friday, city councilman Patrick Cannon, Charlotte Chamber’s Keva Walton and Rep. Mel Watt encouraged attendees to support the new spot. The all-hands-on-deck call for support wasn’t necessary. The opening of Delta’s has been one of the most highly anticipated events in Black Charlotte. With the much-hyped anticipation and sleek style, Delta’s is poised to be the new hang out spot for Charlotte’s black professionals. We’ll see.
